Foundations of Riding at Clarity Equine
NEXT START DATE
Spring 2026 | TBD
Program Purpose
Clarity Equine uses a comprehensive approach to horsemanship to encourage aspiring horsemen and horsewomen to build the foundational skills they will use when working with horses for their lifetimes.
Riding Foundations brings together the early skills of horsemanship that often take many lessons to develop, and encourages collaboration using a group format. Participants learn how horses think, move, and communicate while building the practical skills needed to handle horses and subsequently ride safely and confidently.
The Clarity Team developed this program with riding lessons in mind - recognizing that so many of the skills learned on the ground transition to the saddle. This program supports new riders, returning riders, and those wanting to strengthen fundamentals before joining mounted lessons or group programs.
Most riders begin with Riding Foundations or a private lesson before joining group riding programs.
Program Structure.
Riding Foundations is designed in two phases so participants can build confidence at a comfortable pace while developing the skills needed for riding.
-
Phase 1 — Foundations Basics
(Weeks 1–4)
The first four weeks focus on the core skills that help riders feel safe and comfortable around horses.• Horse behavior & body language
• Grooming with purpose
• Catching, haltering & safe leading
• Personal space, boundaries & barn awareness
• Tying skills & quick release knots
• Safe horse handling
-
Phase 2 — Riding Readiness
(Weeks 5–8)
The second four weeks build on the basics and introduce skills that prepare riders for mounted learning.• Tack knowledge (saddle & headstall parts)
• Lunging basics & communication on a circle
• Ground driving & steering concepts
• Safe mounting & dismounting
• Correct tacking & untacking routines
• Rider responsibility & arena awareness
Repeatable Phase Note
Participants may repeat the Riding Readiness phase to strengthen confidence, refine skills, and prepare for their next step. Progress is based on comfort and readiness rather than completing the program once.
Who riding foundations is for
Riding Foundations is designed to support riders at different starting points. It’s a great fit if you are:
New to horses and want a safe, confidence-building start
Returning after a break and want time to rebuild comfort and skills
Switching barns and want to align with Clarity Equine’s approach and expectations
An experienced rider who wants to sharpen handling, groundwork, and communication
We meet riders where they are—without rushing the process.
Why we start with foundations
When riders begin without these key building blocks, they often try to learn everything at once—steering, balance, horse behavior, safety, and communication—while already mounted. This can be overwhelming for new students!
Foundations gives riders time to build skills like grooming, safe leading, reading body language, and understanding how horses learn. This also allows students to learn skills and cues that can be transitioned into the saddle. Vocal cues, body language and use of pressure are just some of the things that can be learned on the ground first. This makes mounted lessons feel clearer, calmer, and more successful—especially in a group environment.
This isn’t “less riding.” It’s a better start.

Next Steps After Riding Foundations
Riding Foundations helps riders build comfort, awareness, and practical horsemanship skills. When participants demonstrate readiness, we work together to recommend the next step based on goals, confidence, and program availability.
Completing Riding Foundations does not guarantee immediate placement into mounted riding programs, as lesson spaces are limited and may be full at times.
Participants who complete Foundations are placed on a priority list for future riding opportunities as openings arise. This helps us match riders thoughtfully and recommend the best next step when space becomes available.
Riding Foundations is also designed as a meaningful standalone program for those who enjoy working with horses, learning horsemanship skills, or building confidence without the goal of regular riding.
For many participants, Foundations becomes a valuable experience in its own right — not just a step toward riding.
